Everyone I know is trying to figure out the algorithm.
What time to post. What format performs. Whether the caption should be three lines or thirty. Whether you need a hook in the first sentence or the first word. Whether Threads favors questions or statements this week.
And look — I get it. Platforms are real. Reach matters. Format does affect performance.
But I want to offer a different angle, because I think we're solving the wrong problem.
The algorithm isn't the variable. You are.
And honestly? The platforms are starting to figure this out too.
Instagram rolled out an Interest option on the Explore feed — so users can tell the platform exactly what they want to see more of and less of. Not just "engagement signals" as a proxy for interest. Actual, stated interest. The platforms are moving toward humans telling them what they care about, because it turns out that's more reliable than trying to reverse-engineer it from behavior.

Which means the content that wins isn't going to be the content that games the format. It's going to be the content that shows up in the right interest category because it was actually made for that interest.
Here's what I mean: platforms optimize for engagement. That's the whole game. They want people to stop scrolling, read the thing, respond to the thing, share the thing. They want people to stay on the app.
And what actually makes people do that — consistently, not just once — is content made by someone who genuinely gives a damn about what they're saying.
Actual interest. The kind where you wrote the thing because you couldn't not write it, because the idea was rattling around in your head and needed somewhere to go.
That content hits different. Readers can feel the difference between someone who researched what to post and someone who just had something to say. One reads like content. The other reads like a person.
The most "algorithm-friendly" thing you can do is actually care.
Because genuine interest creates specificity. And specificity creates resonance. And resonance creates the engagement the algorithm is chasing in the first place.
So when people ask me why some posts outperform everything else, the honest answer is usually: because I actually wanted to write that one. I wasn't filling a slot on a content calendar. I wasn't optimizing for a format. I had a real thought and I put it out there.
This doesn't mean posting randomly whenever inspiration strikes. Systems still matter — I'm not abandoning that. But the system should create space for genuine interest to show up, not replace it.
The question worth asking isn't "what does the algorithm want this week?"
It's "what am I actually thinking about right now that my audience would care about too?"
Start there. The algorithm tends to follow.
